1. Addresses Must Be Displayed on Buildings

In the coming days, SSD plans to conduct a safety sweep of the neighborhood to identify which buildings are missing proper addresses.  New Orleans municipal code requires:

    Sec. 26-187. - Premises identification.

“The municipal address of a building must be displayed and must be in a position to be plainly legible and visible from the street fronting the property. The numbers must contrast with their background. Address numbers must be Arabic numerals or alphabet letters. Numbers or letters must be a minimum of four inches high with a minimum stroke width of 0.5 inch.”

    (M.C.S., Ord. No. 21228, § 2, 9-4-03)

Wherever possible, a notice will be left for the building’s owner, alerting them to the missing address. The aim is to improve public safety, by allowing emergency services (police, ambulance, fire, utilities) to locate premises as quickly as possible.
