  11. NOPD: ‘Apply to Serve on PCAB’ by 3/23

The deadline has been extended to apply to serve on your neighborhood’s Police Community Advisory Board (PCAB).  The new deadline is Friday, March 23rd.

The purpose of these neighborhood boards- 1 in each of our 8 NOPD districts- is for residents to come together on a regular basis, openly discuss quality-of-life concerns and issues particular to their neighborhoods, and advise the police department on how to better work with residents to make districts safer.

A PCAB member’s role is to actively speak with people in his/her community to identify neighborhood concerns and offer recommendations that reflect the views of a variety of residents.  At least one NOPD employee will also attend the meetings, in case board members have questions about police department policies.  After each PCAB meeting, recommendations will be brought before NOPD District leadership for their consideration.

Once selected, PCAB members will remain on the board for the period of 1 year.  They will be expected to attend all quarterly meetings as well as perform other duties throughout the year.  There is no compensation for serving as a PCAB member.  Anyone who is a New Orleans resident and is at least 18-years-old is encouraged to apply.

Applications may be submitted online at http://www.nola.gov/GOVERNMENT/nopd/pcab as well as in person or faxed to local Police District locations.

The creation of the PCABs will strengthen ties between the people of New Orleans and the police officers who serve them. When residents work with members of the NOPD, together, we get the immediate advantage over criminals, and together, we win in the fight against crime.

  13. New Second District Commander Paul Noel

Although no NONPACC meeting will be held this month due to Mardi Gras, the Second District’s new Commander, Paul Noel, invited neighborhood representatives to learn about him and his future plans on Tuesday night.  About twenty people attended the informal meet and greet and Noel gave everyone an opportunity to introduce him or herself and identify the neighborhood they represented and problems their neighborhoods are experiencing.  Here are a few highlights about Commander Noel and what was discussed at the meeting: This will be Noel’s third post in the Second District, an area of the city where he has spent about half of his career.  He began as a patrolman and later served as commander of the District Investigative Unit.  Noel said he would demand three things from his officers—a commitment to aggressive police work, a commitment to citizen satisfaction, and a resolve not to embarrass the organization.  Noel also made the following request of citizens in the Second District in order to help NOPD do a better job.  First, report suspicious activity immediately to 821-2222.  Be as detailed as possible when making a report and indicate whether you would like to speak to an officer after the activity is investigated.  Second, report any instance where you feel that you received poor service from NOPD.  Call the Second District headquarters (658-6020) and ask to speak to a supervisor.  Finally, please be sure to also report positive experiences, which will serve as a source of pride for the individual officers as well motivation for other officers to do a good job.  I will be attending the NONPACC again in March so please voice any comments or concerns so that I can address them with Commander Noel.  Commander Noel can also be contacted directly by email at pmnoel@nola.gov .

  15. Second District NONPACC Meeting

In the hope of relieving TimG of one of his many duties, I attended my first New Orleans Neighborhood Anti-Crime Council (“NONPACC”) Second District meeting on Tuesday, January 17, 2012.  The meeting brings together representatives of the various neighborhoods that comprise New Orleans’ Second District.  The monthly meeting held at Touro Hospital was an eye-opening experience, including everything from comparative crime statistics and trending to a spirited discussion of NOPD’s need for more officers.  For a detailed and well-written report on the meeting, see Robert Morris’ article in the Uptown Messenger (http://uptownmessenger.com/2012/01/nopd-second-district-monthly-community-meeting-2/).   I plan to attend these monthly meetings going forward so please post any questions or concerns you would like addressed.

Or email me directly at nonpacc@statestreetdrive.com
