SSD readership reaches 400 … more arriving daily!
More neighborhood residents are (re-)signing up - including landlords who live outside SSD or subscribers who got lost in the shuffle when we switched email providers in December. The website and newsletter are slowly growing back to our early-2011 readership of over 500! WE NEED YOUR EYES, EARS AND OPINIONS — BE SURE TO LET YOUR NEIGHBORS AND FAMILY MEMBERS KNOW … Subscribe here.
Note to new arrivals: “SSD” still covers from Octavia/Jeff Davis and all of Nashville, over to Calhoun, between Claiborne and Earhart. Also known as “Greater Bloomingdale” and “Marlyville-Fontainebleau” on the map. -
NOPD: ‘Apply to Serve on PCAB’ by 3/23
The deadline has been extended to apply to serve on your neighborhood’s Police Community Advisory Board (PCAB). The new deadline is Friday, March 23rd.
The purpose of these neighborhood boards- 1 in each of our 8 NOPD districts- is for residents to come together on a regular basis, openly discuss quality-of-life concerns and issues particular to their neighborhoods, and advise the police department on how to better work with residents to make districts safer.
A PCAB member’s role is to actively speak with people in his/her community to identify neighborhood concerns and offer recommendations that reflect the views of a variety of residents. At least one NOPD employee will also attend the meetings, in case board members have questions about police department policies. After each PCAB meeting, recommendations will be brought before NOPD District leadership for their consideration.
Once selected, PCAB members will remain on the board for the period of 1 year. They will be expected to attend all quarterly meetings as well as perform other duties throughout the year. There is no compensation for serving as a PCAB member. Anyone who is a New Orleans resident and is at least 18-years-old is encouraged to apply.
Applications may be submitted online at http://www.nola.gov/GOVERNMENT/nopd/pcab as well as in person or faxed to local Police District locations.
The creation of the PCABs will strengthen ties between the people of New Orleans and the police officers who serve them. When residents work with members of the NOPD, together, we get the immediate advantage over criminals, and together, we win in the fight against crime.

"Bicycling for Boomers" (Saturday 1/28)
GET BACK ON THE SADDLE
Dust off that old bike, or walk up to see how you can incorporate bicycle riding into your everyday life.
Through hands-on activities, we’ll answer the question:“As I age, what is the right bike for me?” (e.g. trikes, arthritis, rehabbing from an injury or knee replacements, safety)
All are welcome, but we’ll target our lesson to Baby Boomers — people aged 48 – 66 AND their families and friends. Bring your crew!
