1. Plant-Stealing Woman Confronted

    From a Fontainebleau neighbor:
“I live on Fontainebleau Drive in a corner house with an ever-evolving garden.  I have been having ongoing problems with someone ripping flowers off some of my plants on both sides of the sidewalk all along our property.  On Monday of this week I had been gardening for a few hours and had gone inside for a few minutes before leaving to pick up kids at school.  As I was driving away along Fontainebleau, I looked down Burdette and saw a woman bending over the ginger that’s planted in front of the backyard fence.  She was trying to break a piece off.  I drove around the block, stopped, and then confronted her as she was continuing down Burdette.  She was holding the only bloom from my lily of the nile, another very large flower stalk from another plant in the front of my house, and an armful of other flowers that probably were ripped from other yards in the neighborhood.  She is an older African American woman, slighty heavy-set, and seemed to be partially toothless.  She seemed not to understand what the problem was and said, ‘They’re for a funeral.  No hard feelings, okay?’

I just wanted everyone to be on the lookout for her.  I’m not sure that my catching her in the act will keep her from doing it again”

  5. NOPD: Auto Burglary & Theft Safety Tips

Thefts from vehicles occur at all hours of the day and night.  Most auto-burglaries generally have one thing in common, something valuable left in the car. Many auto-burglaries are “crimes of opportunity”; they could have been avoided had simple preventative steps been taken.

In the Second District in 2012, approximately two thirds of all reported automobile burglaries are unlocked.

Auto Burglary & Theft Prevention Tips

    • Make sure your car is locked at all times, a majority of vehicles burglarized have been reported to be unlocked at the time of report.
    • Never leave your vehicle running while unattended.
    • Always remove your keys while refueling.
    • Keep all personal items, such as checkbook, personal identification, credit cards, purses, wallet and CD’s out of view, firearms should be taken out of vehicle everytime you exit.
    • Always activate any anti-theft you have on your vehicle.
    • Don’t hide spare keys or valet key in your car. Do not leave any other vehicle or house keys in your car
    • Many people leave the GPS units on their dashboards, which makes it very easy for thieves to see and steal. If you own a GPS unit, never leave it visible when leaving your car unattended. If your GPS unit attaches with a suction cup, hide it and the GPS unit when you exit the vehicle.
    • Never leave high tech devices such as cellular phones, portables TV’s, or laptop computers
    • Do not place your vehicle title in your glove compartment.

  19. Copper Thieves Strike Utility Poles on Nashville

A survey of utility poles along Nashville Avenue revealed that nearly half of them are missing important ground wires.  How about the one(s) near you?

Evidently, copper thieves cut the heavy gauge cables - typically the bottom 7 feet or so - to sell for quick cash at scrap yards.  The problem, which can lead to serious fire hazards when lightning strikes, has been reported to Entergy, who will send an inspector within 24 hours.

Most affected are the 3100-3200 blocks of Nashville Avenue, although one pole on Calhoun and another on Fontainebleau also had to be reported.  All of them display classic signs (see photo) of tampering: broken or missing wooden/rubber sleeves; cut copper wiring; and/or staples with nothing running through them.

PLEASE CHECK THE POLE(S) NEAREST YOUR HOME and report any missing or damaged ground wires to Entergy at 1-800-ENTERGY (press options 2, 3, 1 to reach the appropriate department).  Be prepared to give an address, cross street, pole tag number, your name and callback number to the operator.
